Handwriting Success in the Classroom
Stages 1 and 2

Full day/short course

Handwriting is an underrated skill and children rely heavily on it to support their literacy development. This one day workshop provides the answers to the questions that we are commonly asked in a way that is relevant to classroom practice. It aims to equip teachers with important information about how the foundation skills for handwriting develop and to use this information to provide practical strategies for handwriting programming through the stages.

You will learn about:

  • How to improve children’s performance across key areas of handwriting such as speed, letter formation, pressure, control and fluency, spacing and alignment and the organisation of their work.

  • Background information that deepens your understanding about the way children’s hands develop and how this relates to handwriting and other fine motor skills.

  • The motor learning process involved in learning handwriting and how you can use this knowledge to maximise children’s memories for making letter shapes and increase their ability to self monitor.

  • How to build children’s confidence as their handwriting skills emerge.

  • Why a child may adopt a particular pencil grasp and what can be done to shape this.

  • The types of implements and commercially available pencil grips that you can use and how to begin to assess their suitability.

  • Developing suitable strategies in your classroom handwriting programme for all stages.

  • How to apply this information in order to facilitate the use of related manipulatives across key learning areas.

Have all your questions about handwriting answered!
